Bio

Usually a Bio is written as the story of a person's past accomplishments.  And yet Bio means Life, which happens in this present moment, happening now as you read this.  The great wonder of Life, of Bio, is how it connects us all through Spirit, through simple Being, through that Pure, Primal Consciousness within, the essence of who we really are.  And yet if my Bio were to simply read "The same Life that reads this, plays the flute through Jon Sherman", would that be enough?  It aught to be, since that connection with and understanding of Life is what 55 years of living, 36 years of flute playing (16 of those on the native American flute) has taught me.  That it's not about history, personality, ego, cultural identity, name dropping, past awards or future ambitions, but about being fully present in this moment, in Spirit, while playing.  This moment where Life is.  Where Bio is.

Making branch flutes has taught me a similar wisdom.  That it's not about me anymore.  In truth, the more I get out of the way, quieting my mind and the thousand and one thoughts of ego, the better I can listen to the needs of each unique branch, giving full awareness to finding its clear, sweet voice as a flute.  A branch flute is always completely present, like the tree that grew it.  So the best this branch flute player/maker can do is live his Bio, here and now.

I love making and playing branch flutes.  It's right livelihood for me, an integral aspect of my spiritual life, as well as my full time vocation.  I love the ongoing adventure of it, never knowing what opportunities might come my way as a player.  Or as a maker, which branches might teach me new songs, or a new way of making a flute.  My hope is that in living my life, others might experience the simple, creative joy that playing a branch flute can give them.  Or the peace of mind and sense of deep connection with all Life that happens when a flute is played surrendered to the moment.  If that happens for you, it would be the best Bio I could write.

In Peace,
Jon Sherman
