Some of the bark has been left on this 6 holed, unsplit Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens ) branch flute,
contrasting nicely with the exposed and finely finished wood grain.
Measuring 21 1/2" in length it is tuned to
an F# minor pentatonic scale, modes 1 & 4.
Surface checks and knot holes, as well a few bark crevices,
have been inlaid with Sleeping Beauty Turquoise
Elk lacing with Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and horn bone beads
holds the bird to the nest, the bird fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe to aid against wetout.
The branch for this flute
was gathered from the ground, under a grove of Coast Redwood trees that grow at
Descanso Gardens.
