Some
of
the bark has been left on this unsplit Toyon (Heteromeles
arbutifolia)
branch
flute, the deeper bark crevices inlaid with crushed
malachite. The area at the tone holes has been
sanded down and finely finished, exposing the beautiful
color and grain of the Toyon wood. Measuring
17 3/4"
in length and concert
tuned to Bb minor
pentatonic, modes 1 & 4, it plays the Gypsy scale as
well as 4
upper octave notes (as heard in the sound sample) when the
top tone
hole is half-holed.
Elk lacing
with malachite and horn bone beads holds the bird to the
nest.
The branch for this one of a kind flute was gathered at
the beautiful Descanso
Gardens.
